The Invitation

Hello dear Vineyard Family,

I’m new to the Creative Writing Team, although I’ve always loved working with words. I never liked poems, however, until a college English professor played songs and suggested the lyrics were like stanzas in a poem.

When I became a follower of Jesus, I was surprised to find poetry in the Bible. King David—who was a wonderful minstrel and song writer—often used poems to express his gut-level feelings of joy, frustration, and pain coupled with a depth of affection and trust in our magnificent Lord.

I don’t write poems very often, but I like the challenge. It requires me to choose precise words that sound right and seem to fit. I’ve found it to be a truly creative endeavor and way of thinking that is different from my typical daily autopilot of logic and working with numbers.

I discovered I can only write poems if I let Holy Spirit lead me into places where my heart does the talking. Perhaps this is one of the reasons why God called David a man after His own heart. Compared to David’s proficiency, I’m a just a novice who’s beginning the adventure of learning this language of lyrics, but I’d like to share this one with you!

The Invitation

I’m sick
Had enough
Of brokenness and stuff
The cracks
The gaps
The shattered dreams
The faulty things of shapeless seams
There’s no life in tomorrow
Just hopelessness and sorrow.

But wait—the One who knows
Comes to bid me grow
He loves me through the jagged edge
Surrounds me with a tender hedge
Bids me come unto the ledge
Where I can jump to die.

For each new leap, I’ll fly
Into His tender heart
To occupy my part.
Again—again—again
Go deeper still within.
