How to Find Your Identity in Christ

October 22, 2018 | Mary Mark

Being a mom, most of us women know can be the most rewarding job in the world but also the most exhausting. I am currently 31 weeks pregnant with our second child, Kourtney, a mom to a 5-year-old kindergartner, Kristopher, and also a wife to my husband of 10 years Phil. I also work full time during the week and take care of the household in my "free time" on the weekends. So, most weeks when Sunday comes around I am just ready to crash from the business of the days prior. I know stay at home moms feel the same way as I do because that to me is a full-time job.

In the mist of being this tired mom, I sometimes can forget about who else God created me to be. I can struggle to find my identity in Christ - my other titles besides wife or mom. I struggle to make the time to search what other "titles" God has given me and who he says I am.

There are days that I feel like I just go through the motions of life and don't take the time to really focus on what plans God has for me and honestly, I am just too tired to even put the pieces together. So, I just want to focus on a few ideas that can help us feel less exhausted and give us the energy to really seek after our identity in Christ.

#1. Dig into God’s Word.

Matthew 11:28, "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest."

I love that we can go to God for any situation in our lives. When we are exhausted we need to go to him and pray for that rest, he has us equipped to handle anything that we face in life, "For he (I) know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord..." (Jeremiah 29:11). If we take what little time we might have to reach for our Bibles and dig into this word, we will find a sense of peace and also, more about who he is shaping us to be. When you feel like you have the weight of the world on your shoulders and you feel like you cannot continue, cast your cares and burdens to God, he will help take care of them, you just have to ask.

#2. Turn to Worship.

Psalm 105:2, "Sing to him, sing praise to him; tell of all his wonderful acts."

This has been something new for me recently. The song "You Say" by Lauren Daigle hits home for me. I love the lyric "The only thing that matters now is everything YOU think of me, in YOU I find my worth." I cry this out to him whenever I hear this song on the radio which has been quiet frequently lately, because I truthfully have struggled the past couple months to figure out who I am in God's eyes and if I am living out the life HE has planned for me.

In the midst of being that busy, exhausted, tired mom, we need to remember that God is putting our lives together for something greater than we could ever imagine. Something I need to do, as you might also, is write down every characteristic about yourself that is good to help just shine some light on who YOU think you are. Then, reflect on everything you wrote down and remember that God made you that way. Perfect in his eyes. We need to remember that God is putting our lives together for something greater than we could ever imagine. I will always have the title of "mom", but God has even better plans for our future and even more titles to give you.
