How to Discover Your Natural Design Through God's Nature

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth ... Then God said, 'Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness...' So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them." Genesis 1:1, 26-27

"In the beginning God created..." The very first thing we learn about God — in the beginning of time — is that He created. Our God, The Creator.

In the same way, we pray for God’s love, we can ask for His creativity. We were made in God’s own image which means that we too can create. Creativity can be such an ambiguous and mystical word that many don’t want to touch, but I’m here to tell you today that every single person is creative, and our Father wants to meet us in our creative process.

Creativity is the process of creating something new. This could be using your problem-solving skills or it could be writing a new song — but whatever it is, believe that you are creative and that your heavenly Father wants you to exercise your creative gifts.

Here are a few steps to partner with God in your creativity:

#1. Invite Holy Spirit.

Psalm 139:7-10, “Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast.”

The Holy Spirit is everywhere, and He wants to be a part of your creativity. I have a friend who is an amazing artist — she paints, draws, and can do any DIY project you can imagine. But, what I love the most about her is that the biggest way she connects with God is through Bible Journaling. She doesn’t just leave her creativity for cool projects, but instead, she invites the Holy Spirit to meet her there. Through the process of Bible journaling, she has been able to connect and learn from the Bible in ways she never has before.

When we invite the Holy Spirit into our creativity, we can connect with Him in unimaginable ways.  Regardless of how you are creative, invite the Holy Spirit to meet you there. You’ll be surprised with how close you can feel to God.

#2. Ask God how you are creative.

1 John 5:14, “This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.”

Our Father wants to talk to us. He wants to tell us how He sees us. On a regular basis, I ask God how I am creative and then write about what I think He is speaking to me. It’s been amazing to hear how God sees my creativity throughout different areas of my life. I encourage you to ask God how you are creative. You might be surprised by his response, and that’s what I love about our God. He doesn’t just view creativity through art, but you might be creative through science, engineering, writing, teaching, managing people, jokes that you share with your friends, or how you interact with strangers. In the same way that there are countless ways that God is creative, there are countless ways that His kids are creative as well! But don’t just believe me, ask God and He will tell you Himself!

#3. Let go of creating perfection.

1 Timothy 4:4, “For everything God created is good...”

I love this verse because like it says in Genesis, God created us and His creations are good. God’s love for us — His creation — is unconditional and it doesn’t have specific guidelines. There’s nothing I can do to make God love me less and there’s nothing I can do to make him love me more. I think this is also true when it comes to creativity. It’s easy to feel like we are not good enough or talented enough. But when we connect with God through creativity, it becomes His creation through us ... and everything God created is good.

#4. Dialogue with the Father.

Hebrews 11:6 (The Message), “It’s impossible to please God apart from faith. And why? Because anyone who wants to approach God must believe both that he exists and that he cares enough to respond to those who seek him.”

I love this! God wants to meet with us where we are. He loves when we try and seek Him in new and innovative ways. But it’s important to talk with God while we are creating. God loves the process. He wants to be invited into us trying new creative things and the process of crafting something new. There’s beautiful dialogue that can happen when we talk to God through creating.

#5. Give it back to God.

Matthew 10:27, “What I tell you in the dark, speak in the daylight; what is whispered in your ear, proclaim from the roof.”

Now that we have talked about the first four steps, this one is the most important. God has placed gifts in your life that are amazing. He has whispered things in your ear that He wants you to proclaim from the rooftops. The best way to thank God for the gifts He gave us is to give them back to Him.

The one thing I want you to take away is this: Our Father wants to meet us in our creative process. He wants to talk to us in new ways.
